The fighting, which appears to be the worst in many months, is concentrated around the government-held town of Avdiivka. At least eight people including a civilian were killed overnight and dozens more injured. The Ukrainian army has accused pro-Russian forces of ignoring the truce.

Russian-backed militias have denied the allegations. Moscow has accused Kiev of undermining peace agreements. The Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia is extremely concerned over the recent Ukrainian offensive. The European Union says an upsurge in fighting between the two sides is an outright breach of the Minsk truce accords and must be stopped immediately. Eastern Ukraine has been the scene of clashes since 2014. Nearly 10-thousand people have been killed in the fighting since then.
