The UN Security Council called for an immediate return to a ceasefire in the east of the country where Ukrainian troops and pro-Russia forces have been locked in fighting in the past several days. Security Council members expressed misgivings over the deterioration of the situation and its severe impact on the local civilian population. The violence has also set the alarm bells ringing in Europe. The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe has called for a cessation of hostilities.

The O-S-C-E official made the comments while talking to reporters in the Donetsk town of Avdiivka, east of Ukraine. Three days of fighting between Ukrainian troops and pro-Russia forces there has left at least 13 people dead and thousands of locals without power in freezing conditions. The Russian-speaking regions in eastern Ukraine demand greater autonomy from Kiev. But Ukraine and its Western allies claim Moscow is fueling the crisis. Nearly ten-thousand people have been killed since April 20-14 when the Ukrainian army launched its military operation to crush the pro-Russians.
